AI shopping agents are coming for Ecommerce.

Hey guys, let me tell you about something that is going to completely change the way people buy stuff online. And no, I’m not being dramatic. This is massive.

You’ve probably heard people throwing around the term “AI” like confetti at this point. Every second ad on your feed is about some new AI tool that’s going to change your life. But here’s the thing. There’s one specific AI trend happening right now that every single ecommerce store owner needs to pay attention to. It’s called agentic commerce.

What the heck is agentic commerce?

Long story short, it’s when AI doesn’t just help people search for products. It actually goes and buys stuff for them. Think about it like having a personal shopping assistant who knows exactly what you want, compares prices across a bunch of stores, reads the reviews, and then hits the buy button on your behalf.

Sounds like science fiction? It’s already happening.

ChatGPT launched something called Instant Checkout late last year. So now when someone asks ChatGPT “find me the best organic dog treats under $30,” it doesn’t just give them a list. It shows them actual products from real stores, including Shopify stores, and lets them buy right there in the conversation. No browsing. No scrolling through Google. No visiting your website at all.

Microsoft Copilot is doing the same thing. Perplexity is doing the same thing. And here’s the number that should make you sit up: AI platforms are expected to account for $20.9 billion in retail spending this year alone. That’s nearly four times what it was in 2025.

So why should you care if you’re just starting out?

Because this changes the game for small store owners in a really exciting way. You know how the biggest complaint I hear from people starting an online store is “how am I going to compete with the big guys?” Well, AI shopping agents don’t care how big your company is. They don’t care if you have a massive marketing budget or a fancy brand. They care about one thing: is your product the right fit for what the customer is looking for?

That’s it. That is the whole game now.

If your product descriptions are clear, your pricing is competitive, your reviews are solid, and your store data is structured properly, an AI agent will recommend your product just as readily as it would recommend something from a huge retailer. That is an incredible equaliser for small business.

Shopify has already jumped on this. Their Winter ’26 Edition launched something called Agentic Storefronts. What this does is it takes your products and puts them directly into AI conversations on platforms like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity. You set it up once in your Shopify admin and your products become discoverable by AI agents across multiple platforms. You don’t need to be a tech wizard. You don’t need a developer. It’s built right in.

OK so what do you actually need to do?

Here’s where I’m going to get practical because that’s what we do at Click Start Digital. We don’t just talk about trends. We help you actually do something about them.

First, your product data needs to be squeaky clean. AI agents are reading your product titles, descriptions, prices, shipping info, and reviews to decide whether to recommend you. If your product title is something vague like “Beautiful Handmade Thing” instead of “Handmade Soy Candle Vanilla Scent 300g Australian Made,” the AI is going to skip right over you. Be specific. Be descriptive. Include the details people actually search for.

Second, get your reviews sorted. 73% of consumers are already using AI in their shopping journey, and one of the biggest things AI agents do is summarise reviews to help people decide. If you have zero reviews or only bad ones, you’re invisible to these agents. Start asking your happy customers for reviews today. Make it easy for them. Send a follow up email. Offer a small incentive. This stuff matters more than ever now.

Third, make sure your store is technically sound. This means fast loading times, proper schema markup (that’s basically code that tells search engines and AI agents what your products are), and clean navigation. If you’re on Shopify, a lot of this is handled for you, which is one of the reasons we love building stores on that platform.

Fourth, turn on Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts if you haven’t already. It’s sitting right there in your admin panel. This is free visibility on AI platforms that millions of people are already using to shop. Not turning it on is like having a shop on a busy street and keeping your doors closed.

But won’t AI just send everyone to the cheapest option?

This is the question I get asked the most, and the answer is no. Not necessarily. Here’s why. AI agents are getting smarter about understanding what people actually want. If someone asks for “the best Australian made skincare for sensitive skin,” the AI isn’t just going to show them the cheapest moisturiser on Amazon. It’s going to look for products that match all of those criteria. Australian made. Good for sensitive skin. Well reviewed. Available to ship.

This is where small, niche ecommerce businesses have a massive advantage. You know your product better than anyone. You know your customer better than anyone. When your product data reflects that expertise and that specificity, AI agents pick up on it.

The brands that are going to struggle are the generic ones. The ones with lazy product descriptions. The ones that are trying to be everything to everyone. Sound familiar? That’s the same advice I’ve been giving for 14 years. The fundamentals haven’t changed. The delivery mechanism has.

What’s coming next?

By 2030, nearly half of all online shoppers are expected to use AI shopping agents regularly. Visa and Mastercard are already building payment systems specifically for AI agent transactions. There’s even a new open standard called the Universal Commerce Protocol that’s being developed to let AI agents interact with online stores more smoothly.

This isn’t a fad. This is the future of how people buy things online. And the businesses that get set up for it now are going to have a freaking huge head start.

Here’s my honest take on all of this.

I love this trend because it rewards the things I’ve always taught: know your customer, describe your product clearly, deliver great service, and build a store that actually works properly. AI agents are basically automating the process of finding good products from good stores. If that’s you, you win.
